Paolo De Matteis (Italia, 1662 - Italia, 1728)
Susanna and the Elders / Lot and his Daughters, Paolo De Matteis, Piano Vetrale 1662 - Napoli 1728
Susanna and the Elders
Lot and His Daughters
Pair of oil paintings on canvas, 234x182 cm; contemporary black and gilt lacquered wooden frames. (Some paint loss; some restorations to the canvas.)
Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Prof. Nicola Spinosa
As Spinosa writes, the two canvases represent "a remarkable example of Paolo de Matteis's work immediately after 1700, coinciding with and influenced by his stay in Paris between 1702 and 1705, where he came into contact with various French painters navigating between late Baroque and Rococo. The result of this, as well as other paintings executed during his Parisian years, is a succession of solutions already decidedly Rococo in style and orientation, while still rooted in his previous experiences influenced by Luca Giordano."
