Girolamo Troppa

Hagar and Ishmael, 1690–1700
oil on canvas, 107.5 x 149.5 cm
Provenance: probably formerly in the Pellegrino Peri collection, 1699; private collection, Ferrara
Written statement by Francesco Petrucci, 6 March 2025

As noted in Professor Petrucci’s study, the painting could be one of the two works of the same subject mentioned in the inheritance inventory of the merchant Pellegrino Peri dated 1699. Moreover, although the theme was favored by seventeenth-century Roman painting, this work represents a unique example within Troppa’s extensive catalogue and a rather rare subject in his production, as emerges from the examination of his many works documented in old inventories and now lost.
